He would pose alone, even when a girlfriend was present. When he posed, he held poses well, but he also knew I liked drawing sleeping models. Often, he would come over, strip, lie down, and sleep.  I would draw him, and whichever girlfriend it was that week would sit in a chair and do her thing. One time, when he was over, I made a paper crown.  Just for the fun of it, I put the crown on his head while he was sleeping.  When he woke up, I was ready with my camera and took pics of him, slowly realizing there was something on his head and his confusion about what it was. Developing your identity is often difficult, more so when you don't have positive examples of living an alternative lifestyle. The lack of acceptance and support is internalized and often leads to self-loathing. This drawing partially celebrates how far the gay community has come, claiming the wheatfields. Of course, there is a long way to go for total acceptance, but there are now openly gay farmers in North Dakota. There are public displays of affection between same-sex couples, holding hands at the farmers market and buying produce together. There are elected public officials locally and nationally and openly gay people in schools: teachers, students, sports players, parents. So many brave people were strong enough to demand their right to be open about who they are, making it possible to claim the wheatfields. I was never too good at drawing from memory, so trying to get a good likeness of him that way wouldn’t happen.   Then, I decided he was a badger.  So I drew the picture “Joe,” depicting him as such.  I showed it to him, told him it was him because he was physically beautiful in an unconventional way, as well as secretive, persistent, nocturnal, and aggressive… traits that made him embody the badger.
