"Claiming The Wheatfields" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen & Marker) - 38″ x 26″ - "Growing up in Western North Dakota on a farm/ranch, the isolation and the culture provided little opportunity for seeing positive gay role models. Developing your identity is often difficult, more so when you don't have positive examples of living an alternative lifestyle. The lack of acceptance and support is internalized and often leads to self-loathing. This drawing partially celebrates how far the gay community has come, claiming the wheatfields. Of course, there is a long way to go for total acceptance, but there are now openly gay farmers in North Dakota. There are public displays of affection between same-sex couples, holding hands at the farmers market and buying produce together. There are elected public officials locally and nationally and openly gay people in schools: teachers, students, sports players, parents. So many brave people were strong enough to demand their right to be open about who they are, making it possible to claim the wheatfields. But sadly, the flag is at half-mast in memory of those that paid dearly and took their own life because the fight for acceptance and personal identity was overwhelming." -Ted Martin
"Guns" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen, Calligraphy Ink & Crayola Crayon) - 38″ x 26″ - "The random and focused mass shootings in this country are a haunting concern. No one is really safe because of the randomness of the attacks, though groups like the gay community, have been the focus of mass shootings. From my point of view, the amount of money that the NRA spends to ensure almost unlimited access to different weapons makes them complicit in every mass shooting." -Ted Martin

"Fox, Assuming Role of Guard Dog" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen & Calligraphy Ink) - 16"x20"
"Crows Crossing" - Ink Drawing (Micron Pen) - 11"x14" "During the almost three years he posed for me, he had several girlfriends. He would pose alone, even when a girlfriend was present. When he posed, he held poses well, but he also knew I liked drawing sleeping models. Often, he would come over, strip, lie down, and sleep. I would draw him, and whichever girlfriend it was that week would sit in a chair and do her thing. One time, when he was over, I made a paper crown. Just for the fun of it, I put the crown on his head while he was sleeping. When he woke up, I was ready with my camera and took pics of him, slowly realizing there was something on his head and his confusion about what it was. I kept the crown and took photos of him wearing it often. For that year, and sometimes after, I would draw pictures of him with the crown, surrounded by crows, and he became the crow king." -Ted Martin

"Birdcage" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen & Calligraphy Ink) - 11"x14" - "A friend of mine talked about owning a bird cage with no bird. He just liked the craftsmanship of the object. It intrigued me as I had never considered bird cages in an artistic way. The model is J.L., who posed for about six years. During those six years, he was in and out of jail many times. The list of reasons was fairly long and varied. As I perused a collection of antique bird cage references, the idea of jailbird J.L. freeing birds came to mind." -Ted Martin
"Sunflower Buffalo" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen & Marker) - 11"x14"
"Joe" - Ink Drawing (Gel Pen & Calligraphy Ink) - 13.5”x21.5" - "I always wanted to draw Joe, but he wouldn’t pose, and photos weren’t allowed. I really wanted to get him down on paper before he disappeared from my life. I was never too good at drawing from memory, so trying to get a good likeness of him that way wouldn’t happen. Then, I decided he was a badger. So I drew the picture “Joe,” depicting him as such. I showed it to him, told him it was him because he was physically beautiful in an unconventional way, as well as secretive, persistent, nocturnal, and aggressive… traits that made him embody the badger. I guess he didn’t like the drawing or being compared to a badger, because from that point on, when he came over, I could take photos. Ironically, I no longer have any drawings of him from photos." -Ted Martin
